Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki, 75, from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and has appointed Bishop Jeffrey S. Grob, auxiliary bishop of Chicago, as his successor.
The resignation and appointment were publicized in Washington, D.C. on November 4, 2024, by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is comprised of 4,758 square miles in the State of Wisconsin and has a total population of 2,363,605 of which 529,771, are Catholic.

Pope Francis has recognized Archbishop Grob’s extraordinary gifts and is returning him to his home state of Wisconsin as leader of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. “While still recovering from the surprise of the Holy Father’s appointment, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to take up this new role in my home state,” Grob said in an announcement by the archbishop of Milwaukee. “And trusting deeply in the Lord’s goodness, I commit myself to the service of the people of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. I am excited to get to know them and look forward to growing together in faith.” Grob was ordained as a priest with the Archdiocese of Chicago by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin in 1992 and has served in various roles. He was assistant pastor at Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity Parish in Winnetka and pastor at St. Celestine Parish in Elmwood Park.
He has also served the Archdiocese of Chicago as chancellor and judicial vicar. Grob was appointed auxiliary bishop in 2020.
Grob was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up on a dairy farm near Cross Plains. He attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School in Cross Plains and Holy Name High School Seminary in Madison.
He graduated from the Pontifical College Josephimun in Columbus, Ohio, in 1988 with a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies. He completed his graduate studies at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein in 1999.
Grob received a doctorate of canon law degree from St. Paul University and a doctorate of philosophy degree from the University of Ottawa in Canada in 2007.

Resignation and Appointment of Metropolitan Archbishop of Milwaukee, U.S.A.
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Milwaukee, United States of America, presented by Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Jeffrey S. Grob, until now titular of Abora and auxiliary of Chicago, United States of America, as metropolitan archbishop of Milwaukee, United States of America.
Curriculum vitae
Archbishop-elect Jeffrey S. Grob was born on 19 March 1961 in Madison, in the diocese of the same name. He studied at Holy Name High School Seminary in Madison, and at Saint Meinrad Seminary in Saint Meinrad, Indiana. He was awarded a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, and carried out his theological studies for the archdiocese of Chicago at the Mundelein Seminary, obtaining a Master of Divinity. He was subsequently awarded a licentiate in theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, a doctorate in canon law at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, and a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Ottawa.
He was ordained a priest on 23 May 1992 for the archdiocese of Chicago.
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saints Faith, Hope, and Charity in Winnetka; assistant chancellor; judge of the Court of Appeal of the Ecclesiastical Province of Chicago; parish priest of Saint Celestine in Elmwood Park; judicial vicar; chancellor; and episcopal vicar for the Vicariate I.
He was appointed titular bishop of Abora and auxiliary of Chicago on 11 September 11 2020, and received episcopal consecration the following 13 November.
